Portfolio Simulator Frequently Asked Questions
Updated: February 1, 2005
General Information
Q. What is Project Simulator?
A. Project Simulator is a scenario planning, simulation and
reporting add-in for Microsoft Project enabling project managers
to rapidly visualize, analyze and optimize their project plans.
Q. What is Portfolio Simulator?
A. Portfolio Simulator is a full-featured, stand-alone application
providing scenario planning, simulation and reporting technology,
so your organization can visualize, analyze and optimize their
future portfolio of projects.
Q. How do Project Simulator and Portfolio Simulator
work together?
A. Project Simulator works seamlessly with Portfolio Simulator.
Portfolio Simulator creates portfolios of your optimal, simulation-enhanced
projects developed in Project Simulator. This allows you to
simulate multiple projects and shared resources across the
entire organization, as opposed to one at time, including
portfolio sources of variability
Q. I already use a Monte Carlo Microsoft Project
tool. Why do I need Project Simulator?
A. Monte Carlo is great at showing you the range of possible
outcomes when varying input. Project Simulator, in addition
to allowing you to vary numbers, contains a sophisticated
scenario planning infrastructure allowing you to optimize
your portfolio.
Unlike popular Monte Carlo tools for Microsoft Project, Project
Simulator uses its own proprietary discrete event simulation
and does not rely on the scheduling engine of Microsoft Project.
The discrete event simulation engine can be customized to
model your most unique business operations which Microsoft
Project’s scheduling engine was not designed to handle.
Q. Which version of Microsoft Project do I need?
A. Project Simulator currently only supports Microsoft Project
2003.
